I had a pregnant fiance' and no income. We were fresh out of high school and I was a bright, fresh, young mind full of wonder and aspirations.
I answered an ad for a "marketing design" position hoping to put my Photoshop skills to good use and earn an honest wage.
I bought a new suit, $200. New shoes, $100. Got my haircut (back when I had hair) $50. And headed to the interview.
Two and a half weeks later, I quit. I was more broke than when I started, I was 10lbs lighter, my crisp new suit smelled like sweat and cigarette smoke (not my cigarette smoke mind you, but from the other 4 guys I shared a car with on the way to the job), and my stiff new shoes had been destroyed from walking door to door selling pizza coupons for upwards of 11 hours per day.
I was desperate, so I listened to the hype and tried to make money.
Desperate.
How did it happen? It's a very complicated story of bad business and the manipulation of myself and about 20 other guys, who, like me needed to pay the bills. I would love to type it out in detail, but to be honest I've done my darnedest to try and forget that chapter of my life.
Luckily someone else went to great trouble, and with far more detail that I would ever be capable of, wrote it out.
The DS Max Scam
It's worth the read, if only so you know what to look out for. If you know of anyone who is considering a job at a company like this (which could have any name, the business names are chosen by the local owner), please, stop them at all costs.
