This was a Google Image Search result for "We've got it all figured out". I'm going with it. |
It occurs to me (yes, I'm starting a post with "It occurs to me") that we've got it all figured out. Not in the sense that everything is okay and we all live in a problem free utopia, but more an observation of the apparent belief of more and more people I encounter. Everyone seems to think they've got the answer to at least one of life's great questions, and if everyone knows everything there is to know about at least something, it stands to reason that, collectively at least, we have it all figured out.
The problem is this: we all think we have it all figured out. Instead of pursuing the library of knowledge built into the world around us, we try to solve each and every problem ourselves, leading to our own conclusions about things that have already been dealt with by plenty of people around us.
Is it wisdom we're lacking? Maybe not, but I bet one of your neighbors knows how to fix your toilet.
Here's another thought: If we all decide to come to our own conclusions about everything, than we're destined to disagree on most things.
I figured out how to fix the toilet by combining bubble gum with super glue.
Oh yeah? Well I fixed my toilet by putting a stuffed chimpanzee underneath the bowl to hold it steady.
Oh Yeah? Well I fixed my toilet by meditating really really hard.
Where did you get a stuffed chimpanzee?
The beauty of it is that we can all be right about the same thing even if we're right in different ways. The only real problem I see here is that since we're all figuring out how to reach the same end by different means, or answer the same question with different answers, we're actually locking our own minds to the possibility that someone else might be more right about something. Which is fine, as long as your answer or solution is the most correct answer or solution...
But then, how would you know if your's is the most correct version?
